La sete.

Across town two more women were pulled from a collapsed university building, while in another part of the capital a Mexican-led team freed Ena Zizi, a 69-year-old who was attending a meeting at the residence of Haiti's Catholic archbishop when the earthquake struck.
In the darkness she had spoken with a priest who also was trapped but he fell silent after a few days, leaving her alone. "I talked only to my boss, God," she said, lying on a foil thermal blanket, her hair coated in white dust. "And I didn't need any more humans."
"I'm all right, sort of," she said.

Inghiottito.

Gao Zhisheng has already paid a heavy price for his work as one of China's leading human-rights lawyers. Five years ago he was the darling of the Chinese legal community, feted with awards for the cases he took defending clients in medical malpractice or business disputes. His decision to represent controversial clients such as the victims of forced evictions led to increasingly severe retaliation by the government. Today some observers are worried that he may have died at the hands of the police.
State security forces took Mr. Gao into custody last February, and one of those policemen last week told his brother that he went "missing" while on a walk on Sept. 25. The family's lack of contact with Mr. Gao, in contravention of China's own laws, had already stoked fears for his safety, and this police claim not to have him in custody suggests that the authorities have something to hide in their handling of the case.
Mr. Gao has been a victim of the very legal system whose corruption he worked to expose.

Ancora sulle black jails.

Shi has been imprisoned twice, taken first by security forces to an isolated stockroom and held for days with 100 other people. She was eventually released with her ailing husband, and then was abducted last summer and held for several weeks at a shabby private home.
Jailers denied her requests for water and a piece of paper to swat away the maddening mosquitoes, Shi said.

Personaggi: Lyudmila M. Alexeyeva.

Ms. Alexeyeva is now, by her own count, in her 43rd year of provoking official Moscow. The enemy these days is the soft authoritarian government ushered in by Vladimir V. Putin, previously the president and now prime minister, who methodically constricted the human rights movement. But long before that it was the airless confinement of Leonid Brezhnev’s Soviet Union, where Ms. Alexeyeva was one of a tiny group of intellectuals who risked their lives to press for freedom and human rights.
